"Avoriaz is the highest
resort in the Portes du Soleil, a long-established circuit of a dozen
villages that straddles the Swiss border. The published statistics refer
to 650km of piste (although how this figure is arrived at is best not
examined) served by 207 lifts that are regularly upgraded, to create a
well-linked circus covering vast tracts of land bordered by Lac Léman. In
reality, the Portes du Soleil consists of a series of naturally separate
ski areas. Most are joined by awkward and often confusing mountain links,
while a few, such as St-Jean d’Aulps, Val d’Illiez and Abondance, are
entirely independent." |
