"Courmayeur established its reputation as a
climbing base for the forbidding granite peaks of Mont Blanc, and then as
a popular nineteenth-century spa. Its role as an internationally acclaimed
ski resort came only with the opening of the Mont Blanc tunnel in 1965,
which linked the village with Chamonix and made Geneva airport a 90-minute
drive away.
The heart of the old village is a charming maze of cobbled alleys. It is
largely traffic free and lined with fashion boutiques, delicatessens and
antique shops. There are numerous bars, cafés and restaurants, with a
lively crowd. For anyone interested in observing the prolonged après-ski
passeggiata along Via Roma, it is important to find accommodation within
easy walking distance of the pedestrian precinct. Courmayeur is the
favourite resort of the Milanese, a clientèle for whom lunch is
frequently a greater priority than skiing, and it proudly boasts some of
the finest mountain restaurants in the Alps." |
