"La Plagne has now joined forces with neighbouring Les Arcs to form Paradiski, a ski area of mammoth proportions. Some 425km of groomed runs served by 141 lifts make it one of the most extensive circuits in the world. The double-decker Vanoise Express cable-car now spans the Ponturin gorge between the two resorts. However, many would argue that La Plagne’s own 225km of piste, together with some of the most challenging off-piste powder-skiing in the whole of the Tarentaise valley, was already enough. Indeed, the owners of the lift system (who also run Les Arcs) believe that in the long term only 30 per cent of skiers in either resort will actually make use of the link. This poses the question of why they have spent £11 million building it.
La Plagne consists of ten separate ‘villages’, of which six are purpose-built for ski-in, ski-out convenience in the main, high-altitude bowl up above the tree-line. The other four are outlying villages in the surrounding valleys, accessed by different roads and linked by lifts into the main skiing area. Overall, the resort has all the ingredients of the perfect ski destination: high-altitude snow surety, long runs and piste-side accommodation. But its undeniable reputation as a ‘ski factory’ for intermediates can leave some visitors dissatisfied." |
