"France’s principal high-altitude resort in the
Haute Tarentaise has faced enormous criticism over the years because of
its original, high-rise architecture. This dates from the 1960s and is
wholly alien to Tignes’ glorious mountain setting at the foot of the
twin peaks of the Grande Motte and the Grande Casse. However, the resort
has spent £35 million in the past five years in an effort to improve its
appearance. New buildings, constructed in a much more sympathetic style
than the old ones, are slowly replacing some of the worst 40-year-old
architectural excesses, and so Tignes is undergoing an impressive
renaissance. Many of the older buildings have been re-clad and apartment
owners have been given financial incentives to carry out renovations. Of
the two main villages in Tignes, Le Lac has been entirely remodelled with
a tunnel bypass, and new buildings in Val Claret are much more appealing."
