“A resort that has the right balance of everything. Not only does Verbier have an enormous range and variety of challenging pistes, but it also offers some of Europe’s most exciting lift-served, off-piste skiing. Nowhere is there a more extensive menu of glaciers, couloirs and deep powder bowls for advanced skiers and riders. The Savolèyres and Lac des Vaux sectors provide a more limited playground for intermediates.“
If Carlsberg did ski holidays then this would probably be it. You book cheap flights off the internet and an apartment somewhere near Verbier. We all went down to Montreux on the Lake Geneva shoreline the night before and had a little photo by Freddie Mercury's statue. We turned up in a village called Nendaz to find we had somehow booked a penthouse apartment with the piste outside the front door and the gondola about 30m down the slope. We had a day skiing at Avoriaz to meet up with friends and a little trip over the valley to try Crans Montana. The snow conditions were superb, the days were sunny and we had some fabulous skiing down the unpisted blacks back down from Verbier at the end of the day. Despite his best efforts Ade didn't crash the car although a wing mirror might have been slightly harmed but no dolphins were.We think Verbier has some of the best skiing in Europe.
Wow, just wow. We knew the skiing was superb at Verbier but combine that with some of the best accommodation and you’re on to a winner. What we didn’t know was that the week we went was carnival week which explained why we could only have the chalet until the Thursday. We got it cheap as a posh family had paid for the full two weeks but weren’t able to get out to resort earlier - turned out our chef had just spent four years with Rick Stein in Padstow. We had assumed we could just find beds for the last few days of our week only to find that every bed in Verbier was sold and we were resigned to having to move to another resort. Wednesday arrived and somehow we found a closed chalet that we were told we could use the beds only to find out that the chalet staff had also arrived that day to prepare for guests for the following week who were more than happy to cook for us and invited us to help ourselves to whatever we wanted from the wine cellar.
